1971 októberében zsinati főtanács tartására kerültsor. Az állam hozzájárult a Magyarországon élő unitáriusok püspökséggé történő szerveződéséhez. Az októberi Zsinati Főtanács - az Állami Egyházügyi Hivatal előzőleges hozzájárulásával - püspöknek a lelkészi képesítéssel rendelkező eddigi főgondnokot, dr. Ferencz Józsefet választotta. Őt követte 1988-tól Huszti János, 1994-től Bencze Márton, 2001-től pedig Rázmány Csaba
